Snap, Crackle And Sizzle
Take a look around your house and see if you can count the number of electronic devices your family currently owns. They are everywhere, each bedroom, the kitchen, the livingroom, dining room and maybe even the bathroom. You need to even look in your finished cellar and in your garage. Anyplace with a TV, an ihome, laptop, desktop computer or entertainment system etc is fair game to a power surge.
Combined, we've all spent billions of dollars on electronics and as we round the corner to another holiday season it's a good time to consider the solutions to keeping our electronics safe and ready to entertain us. Surge-protection strips have evolved quite nicely over the last 5 years or so and have become quite sophisticated. Prices have risen on these helpful tools but it's worth it considering they can save you thousands and can even let you know when they have taken a hit for you and need to be replaced.
After you have considered where your electronics live in your house, take a trip to the store and investigate your options. Although these devices may not work 100% they are bound to catch the majority of the surge exposure where not having one gives you zero protection. Some homeowner policies will provide coverage for electronics damaged by power surge, however, there are limitations and deductibles to contend with. Insurance should never be your first line of protection for power surge of electronics, not when the surge-protectors are so readily available to prevent damage.
So think about it while you are doing your holiday shopping this season, consider including a good quality power strip in with your gift giving. Your friends and family will be thanking you the next time that severe thunderstorm banner is running across their big screen tv!
