About Auto Insurance
Agents vs. Companies
Insurance agents are a service organization who assist you in
determining your coverage needs, shop around for the most competitive
price among multiple
insurance
companies, complete necessary paperwork, provide on-going service
and assist with claims. Insurance companies (also referred to as
insurers or carriers) represent an institution to underwrite and issue
insurance policies.
How is Your Insurance Rate Determined?
Two factors determine what you pay for auto insurance; underwriting and
rating. Underwriting is a process where an insurance company
gathers information and decides whether or not to insure you and rating
is a process that determines how much you will pay for insurance. Rating
elements include your claims, vehicles and drivers insured, coverage and
location under the auto policy. Drivers with
clean driving records and low claims history typically have the most
competitive auto insurance rates.
Just as important is to consider other factors besides the price.
Quality of service the company gives, its claims process, policy
provisions, and coverage limits are all important considerations.
Risk Rating / Credit Scoring
Your driving record, area in which you live, gender and age, marital
status, prior insurance coverage, vehicle use and make and model of your
vehicle are common factors that can affect the price you will pay for
your auto insurance. A company may also run your credit
history to decide whether to issue a policy or they may use the credit
history to determine the premium they will charge. However, if an
insurer makes an unfavorable underwriting decision based on your credit
history, they must tell you how you can request a copy of your credit
report. For more information on how insurers use your credit
score, see the Maine Bureau of Insurance's brochure on
Credit Scoring.
In Maine, an insurer may not deny, cancel, refuse to renew or base your
renewal rates based solely on your credit information. In other
words, if the insurer would not normally deny, cancel, refuse to renew,
or raise the rates on your policy without the credit information, then
the insurer may not use the credit information against you.
For your own benefit, it is recommended that you run your own personal
credit report with the three major credit reporting agencies every year.

Additionally, you can also request a free copy of both your
C.L.U.E.® Auto Report and your

Tort System / Mandatory Insurance
Every state implements either a tort system or a no-fault system.
Maine has adopted the tort system. There are three basic coverages
sold under the tort system are bodily injury liability insurance,
property damage liability insurance and uninsured motorists
coverage. In Maine, these insurance coverages are mandatory and
are a prerequisite to registering your vehicle.
Check Into Optional Coverage
The most commonly recognized coverages, in addition to the basic
liability package, are collision and comprehensive coverages.
Collision coverage pays for physical damage to your car as a result
of your auto colliding with an object such as a tree or another car.
This is relatively expensive coverage and is not required by law.
Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your auto from almost all
other causes, including fire, severe weather, vandalism, floods and
theft. This coverage will also cover broken glass and windshield damage.
Comprehensive coverage is less expensive than collision, but is also
optional. Other optional coverages include medical payments coverage,
rental reimbursement coverage, auto loan and lease coverage, customized
parts coverage and towing and labor coverage.
Ask Us About Discounts
Our companies offer a wide variety of discounts; some discounts for
which you may be eligible, such as: multiple
vehicles (even when one vehicle is a company car, insured somewhere
else), driver education courses, good student, safety devices,
anti-theft devices, low mileage, good driver/renewal, auto/home package,
50+ discount, EFT payments, payment in full, and previous insurance just to name a
few.
For Your Protection
It is illegal for unlicensed
insurers to sell insurance, and if you buy from an unlicensed insurer,
you have no guarantee that the coverage you pay for will ever be
honored. Holden Agency Insurance, its companies and its agents are
all licensed. Please review our many
professional affiliations,
associations, certifications and awards.
Read Your Policy Carefully
You should be aware that an auto insurance policy is a legal contract.
It is written so your rights and responsibilities, as well as those of
the insurance company, are clearly stated. When you purchase auto
insurance, you will receive a policy. You should read that policy and
make certain you understand its contents. If you have questions about
your insurance policy, please contact us for clarification.
If you have any particular questions
about car insurance we would be glad to assist you.
